What is Buckingham’s United Nations Project about?

This is a project aimed to the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes that are required in order to exercise a necessary positive leadership for the peaceful resolution of international conflicts, and the collective formulation of guidelines regarding policies for the common good.  Students do research and prepare themselves to participate in simulations of the Organization of the United Nations –ONU.  These simulations, known as United Nations Models, generally include the five main UN organs, such as the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council and the International Court of Justice, some of the six special committees, and certain United Nations Programs. The decision on which of the earlier part will compose the Model is made by the coordinator school or college, who in turn assigns institutions with the countries that they will represent.

Within the model’s development, delegates from each country attend their committees or organs in order to discuss and find solutions or build initiatives toward topics such as peace, security, human rights, development and mainly humanitarian issues. Throughout the year, our students from fourth grade to eleventh grade attend Models outside the school and organize the school's own Model (BuckMUN). They participate, in turn, in models from universities such as Yale (YMUN) and Harvard (HMUN), among others, with highly satisfactory results.

History of the Model United Nations

The United Nations Models (MUN) became very popular since the year 2000. However, this kind of academic exercises had been undertaken since the 1920s. Harvard University developed this activity to make a critical study of the League of Nations. Later in 1945, when the United Nations were created, Harvard University officially created the Model United Nations as well. From that moment until the present day, the Model United Nations has become a synonym of new educational strategies, deeply changing the ways of approaching Social Studies. Due to this, countries like Dominican Republic have adopted the Model United Nations as a strategy to develop leadership abilities that allow them to efficiently face the 21st century challenges.

In Colombia, the Model United Nations was first applied in 1982 by Colegio Nueva Granada.  Since then, many Colombians have participated in this project. However, only during the last decade a significant increase of participants in these conferences has been evident, since many academic institutions have started participating.

At Colegio Bilingüe Buckingham MUN started in 2005, when for the first time in the school’s history and observer was sent to the Colegio San Carlos model. Carolina Rincón was the observer who attended this conference and based on her experience, she got convinced of how important it was to establish the model in the school. Afterwards, during 2006, the group became bigger, reaching five members: Carolina Rincón from 10th grade, Ana Beliza Mercado, Catalina González, Esteban Góngora from 8th grade and Nicolás Forero Villarreal from 7th grade. During this time, Laura Gamboa, a 7th grade History teacher, was in charge of coordinating the school’s MUN. The following year everything changed, when Enrique Pérez entered the school as new head of the model, turning it into a strategy for the school to promote leadership in a globalized world.

Mission

The project of Model United Nations at Colegio Buckingham was founded to develop investigation, argumentation and oratory abilities in the students. It is structured within the framework of the main United Nations principles and aims to promote social conscience and leadership spirit. Furthermore, the project seeks to guide the students towards building a society that is aware of its weaknesses, opportunities, strengths and threats, so it can achieve structural development. In the other hand, it is imperative to recognize the Model United Nations team’s work in including the school’s main values to the project: kindness, quality, excellence, innovation and transcendence.

Vision

By 2015 the project’s aim is to have 97% of positive participation in each Model United Nations the school attends, so it becomes the best MUN group in the UCB and one of the most influential in Colombia. Likewise, it seeks to participate in regional and international models that evidence improvement of the project and its participants, as well as the training of true five star leaders that represent Colegio Buckingham’s values.
